Mahalo nui for reading about our Hōnaunau Ola Mau Loa project!
Now that this project is complete, its results will be sustained – and taken to another level – by the next steps that the community has identified as being high priorities towards achieving its long-term aspirations. It is anticipated that the results of this Phase I project will serve to inspire and mobilize community involvement in 1) the development of a Ho‘oko Kuleana Kupa (“strategic” plan) for the area and 2) the creation of community stewardship agreements with landowner Kamehameha Schools and with the County of Hawai‘i, which leases the nearshore area of Honaunau Bay from Kamehameha Schools for operation of a county park. Early discussions with both of these entities have already taken place and the foundations laid for further development of these community priorities.
There will be ongoing maintenance costs of the hale as well, and we will be installing signage and other improvements, and continuing to host school groups so that they can learn about hale building and its importance in cultural perpetuation.
Please become part of our team by making a donation to support these activities that will continue to strengthen the cultural landscape of Hōnaunau Bay while providing a center for education, ceremony and community connection.
